50&50 is a wine sprung from friendship. The friendship which binds the owners of Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Capannelle in Chianti Classico, and their common desire to strive for excellency with their wines. It is a wine which embodies the distinction of two historic wine producing areas of Tuscany, artfully woven together in a unique expression of double terroir: the galestro-rich soil of Gaiole in Chianti and the clay-rich soil of Montepulciano.
The characteristics of the two terroirs are enhanced through the choice of the grapes which make this wine: Sangiovese from Capannelle, which brings structure, tannins and grip to 50&50, and Merlot from Avignonesi, which enriches it with elegance, softness and depth. A merging of the masculine and the feminine, if you will.
The first vintage of 50&50 was 1988, a truly excellent year, celebrated across Tuscany, and it was born as an experiment, almost by chance: during a jovial dinner the former owners of the two wineries started to compare, mix and match their wines, and came up with the even blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot, that we know today. Little did they suspect that the 50&50 was to become a monument to the winemaking style which shaped the profile of premium quality Tuscan wines throughout the nineties and the new millennium. They had given birth to something truly unique.
