Occhio di Pernice 2001 98 points in Wine Spectator


Occhio di Pernice, our sweet wine produced entirely with Sangiovese grapes and aged "caratelli" (in small oak casks of 50 liters),has recently obtained an impressive 98 points in  the WIne Spectator.

Did you know that it takes the same amount of grapes to produce 24 bottles of Vino Nobile as  it takes to produce ONE half bottle of Occhio di Pernice? This is due to the fact that the grapes are left to dry on reed mats before they are pressed, so that the skin/pulp ratio decreases notably. Furthermore, almost half of the wine evaporates from the caratelli during Occhio di Pernice's  10-year-long ageing period.

What comes out of the caratelli after 10 years are truly precious drops.
